Caledonian Park Clock Tower Project Stage 2 Proposals Give us your feedback

It is really sad that after all the money spent on regenerating Caledonian Park, that it could be spoilt with a hideous portakabin style development that no one wants and isn't fit for purpose. A so called "consultation" has ignored the views of local people to chase heritage lottery money. People want to go up the Clocktower and it needs repairs, no one needs what is being proposed, what a shambles https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/229BFDY Caledonian Park Clock Tower Project Stage 2 Proposals Give us your feedback Last September we consulted on preliminary proposals for the Caledonian Park Clock tower and visitor centre project. We have drawn up detail proposals based on what the majority of people told us. Please have a look at the plans and details below and then follow the link at the bottom of the page to the short questionnaire to give your feedback. The closing date for completion of questionnaires is midnight on Friday 27th March 2015. Project Stage 2 Proposals You can view images of a scale model showing the visitor centre and clock tower here. Drawings and summary details can be viewed below. Site Plan - Site works will focus on the clock tower, market railings and construction of a new park building. Location Plan - The new building will be positioned to the north of the clock tower on the main north-south axis where the main entrance gates currently stand. The location reinforces the north-south axis through the site which will be further strengthened by the reinstatement of the original doorway to the north side of the clock tower. Visitor Centre - View from New Clockside Place - The north side of the building facing New Clockside Place presents a simple frontage with a central covered walkway providing access to the park. The design gives a sense of a civic building, but also a garden building, the panelling reflects the proportion of the stone coursing of the tower. The building is 4.3metres high (same height as the existing gate piers) and 30 metres long. The simple flat roof minimises the visual impact of the view to the clock tower. Planting in front of the building helps to soften its appearance and blend it into the park. Visitor Centre - Section through building and clock tower - The section shows the scale of the new building in relation to the clock tower and the courtyard space that will be formed between them. Visitor Centre Roof Plan - The building will have a green sedum and grass roof that will change and provide interest throughout the year. As many flats will look down on to the roof care has been taken to integrate roof openings and services into its design including an array of solar (photovoltaic) panels to provide electricity for the building. Visitor Centre Floor Plan - The building provides: - A community room that can serve as an education/meeting/café/exhibition space. - A café/ kiosk that can serve into the community space or directly to the outside. - A small office will allow staff to be based at the centre on a regular basis. - Public toilets and baby change facilities. - A room for use by park volunteers. - An activity space where creative/investigative activities can be carried out. Visitor Centre - North Elevation - The north side of the building facing New Clockside Place will be clad in bronze coloured zinc panels with high level windows and full height windows to either side of the central covered walkway. Sliding gates close off the central walkway at night. Visitor Centre - South Elevation - The south side of the building facing the clock tower has large glazed windows and doors that are protected at night by mechanical shutters.Hinged gates close off the central walkway. We are still considering a range of finishes for the walls including timber boarding. A projecting trellis will provide sun screening and a framework for climbing plants to grow over. Clock tower cross section - The plans for the clock tower include essential conservation and repair works and public access improvements.
