Last blocks on Market Estate set to bite dust

BUILT in the 1960s, the rundown blocks are being replaced by modern homes – which resident Maggie Veal says have 'more of a community feel'
THE BULLDOZERS have finally moved in to rip down the last remaining three blocks on a deserted Holloway estate.

Tamworth and the last two Clocktower Place blocks on the Market Estate, Holloway, will be gone forever come the end of August, as the decaying 1960s blocks are replaced by a posh-looking new development called Parkside Place. Every resident of the notoriously run-down estate has now been rehoused in the shadow of the old towers, and though most are happy to see them go, there is also some sadness.

LAST of the old blocks will be demolished by end of August
Maggie Veal, whose late husband Jim was one of the residents who really pushed for the demolition and has a road on the new development named after him, said: "It's quite emotional watching the last blocks come down.

"Market Estate was a great place to live when my husband and I moved here in the 1970s, but it really deteriorated over time. In March we had a big art event here to mark the end of the old buildings. It was a great way to say goodbye to the old estate.

"From my new home I have easy access to the street, so I'm always chatting to my neighbours. There's more of a community feel to the layout, and I'm going to have a great view onto the park. Parkside Place is a fresh start for everybody."

Southern Housing Group, which took over the Market Estate from Islington Council in February 2005, will build another 187 new homes on the site of the old estate over the next two years, adding to the 234 already constructed.

Major improvements will also be made to Caledonian Park, providing toddler and children's play facilities, new gardens and a promenade entrance from North Road.

Stephen Ross, reinvestment director at Southern, said: "The demolition of the remaining Market Estate blocks marks the end of an era for an estate which had not stood the test of time.

"It's an emotional time for residents but it's evident from the many positive comments we have received that people are delighted with their new homes.
